Light and dark

View as Markdown

The colour scheme controls are in the top bar, between the language and your account menu: a quick toggle and a menu beside it.

Three choices

There are three preferences: light, dark, and following your system.

Following your system is the default. On that setting, the app changes with your operating system, and it does so live: flipping your device to dark while the app is open switches the app too, without a reload.

The quick toggle reads what you are actually looking at rather than what is stored, so pressing it on a device-dark tab takes you to light. That is what you expect from a toggle, and it is the reason the toggle and the menu can disagree about wording while agreeing about behaviour.

Where the choice is kept

Your colour scheme is a per-browser preference. It is stored locally in the browser you set it in, and it is deliberately never written to your account.

Three consequences follow.

It does not travel. Set dark on your laptop and your phone will still be on whatever you set there, or on system if you set nothing.

It is not a team setting. Changing it affects only you, and only in that browser.

It survives signing out, because it was never part of your session.

Private browsing

A browser that blocks local storage cannot remember the choice. The app handles this without breaking: the tab you are in still changes, it simply will not remember next time. You will land back on following your system.

Both themes are real

Dark is not an afterthought applied over a light design. Every surface is defined in both, and documentation screenshots are taken in both for the same reason.

What this is not

This is not the language setting, which is account-wide rather than per-browser and behaves quite differently. See Language.
