The sign-in screen, the second-factor step, and what the app does while it restores your session

Section: app. Audience: public. Updated: 2026-09-27.

---
The sign-in screen is headed **"Sign in to your account"**. Enter your email address and password and press **"Sign in"**.

## If your account has a second factor

If two-factor authentication is on, the app does not sign you in yet. The form changes to ask for a code, labelled **"Authentication code"**, and it keeps the email and password you already typed so you do not have to enter them again.

If you cannot reach your authenticator, choose **"Use a recovery code instead"** and the field becomes **"Recovery code"**. Recovery codes are single use.

**"Back"** returns you to the password form without signing you in.

## If your organisation requires a second factor and you have not set one up

You may be stopped at sign-in and asked to set up an authenticator before you can continue. No session is issued until you do. This is covered in [Two-factor authentication](/app/two-step-verification).

## What the other footer links do

- **"Need an account? Sign up"** switches the panel to registration.
- **"Forgot password?"** starts a password reset. See [Reset your password](/app/reset-your-password).
- **"Resend verification"** opens a field where you can ask for a fresh confirmation email without signing in.

## While the app is starting

If you already have a session, the app restores it before it shows you anything, and you see a brief loading state.

If that restore fails because of a network problem rather than because your session has expired, you are not thrown back to the sign-in form. You get a short "connection problem" screen with a **"Retry"** button instead, because signing in again would not have been the fix.

## Signing out

**"Sign out"** is in the account menu at the right end of the top bar. See [Sign out and sessions](/app/sign-out-and-sessions).
