# Guided setup

The setup checklist and the guided funnel that walks a new account through its first connections

Section: app. Audience: public. Updated: 2026-10-02.

---
A new account has nothing in it. Two things exist to get you from there to a working setup.

## The checklist banner

A checklist banner sits at the top of the app while your setup is incomplete. It lists what is still outstanding and links straight to the page that handles each item, so you are never left hunting for where a step lives.

Each link takes you to the right page inside the shell rather than reloading the whole app. That matters if you are running inside Shopify admin, where a full page load would restart the embedded frame.

## The guided funnel

The checklist also offers a resume action that hands you to a guided funnel. The funnel takes over the whole window, replacing the shell, and walks you through setup one step at a time.

You can also enter it directly by adding `?onboarding=1` to the app's address.

The funnel loads only for sessions that actually enter it, so an account that never opens it pays nothing for it being there.

## What each step asks for

Every step either collects what it needs on the spot or says plainly what is missing and what it costs you to leave it. No step sends you to another page to finish something first.

- **Your store** asks where you ship from and the box you usually ship. The ship-from includes a phone number for the sender, because carriers print it on the label and will not accept a label without one. If your Shopify store has a location that fulfils online orders, the address is filled in from it; otherwise from the store's billing address. Anything you saved before is shown again, so coming back to edit it does not start from blank fields.
- **Live rates** prices your newest open order. If a detail is missing, the step shows the field for it and prices the order as soon as you save. If the order itself cannot be priced, for example because its delivery address is incomplete, the step says so and offers **"Continue without live rates"**.
- **First label** lists what the label still needs and collects each item in place: ship-from, parcel, and the carrier and service. The price and your shipping balance are shown before the button. The buy button stays disabled until nothing is missing, and the reason sits next to it.
- **Passports** tells you before you start how many passports your plan lets you create this month, and creates only that many. The step then ends in one of three ways: all created; created up to your plan's allowance, with the number left without a passport; or stopped, with the option to try again.
- **Defaults** shows each shipping default as set from your answers or not set yet. Anything not set yet has a **"Set now"** button that opens its form right there.

Every plan, Free included, can buy labels on Horizon's rates, paid from your balance, or on your own carrier account. Free's labels are capped each month. If your plan does not include Horizon's rates, Live rates still shows Horizon's prices but marks them as not bookable on your plan, and the first-label step lets you connect your carrier account right there, with the same fields as **"Carriers"** in **"Settings"**, and makes it your default carrier. It never offers a purchase that would be refused.

## Moving between steps

Every step after the first has a **"Back"** control that returns to the previous step with what you saved there. Going back never undoes a step.

## The last step

The last step only says you are set up when your first shipment really has everything it needs. Otherwise it reads **"Almost there"**, lists what is still missing, and offers **"Set it up"** for each item the funnel can collect, taking you straight to the step that does.

## Leaving the funnel

The funnel releases you back to the normal shell as soon as your setup is complete. Until then it will keep taking over when you enter it, which is deliberate: it exists so that a half-finished setup does not quietly stay half-finished.

If you would rather finish setting up by hand, close the funnel and work through the pages yourself. Nothing in the funnel is the only route to the thing it configures.
